Protect your child’s smile whilst they play sport

Protect your childs smile whilst they play sport

The summer holidays are starting and for many parents that means organising new school uniform. Is a mouthguard on your list?

Every year thousands of children are treated for dental injuries which could have been avoided or minimised by wearing a custom fitted mouthguard. Studies have shown that approximately 25% of children in the UK will injure and possibly lose a front tooth at some stage and that between 13% and 39% of all dental injuries are sports related.

A custom fitted mouthguard is recommended for anyone who participates in a sport that might pose a risk of injury to the mouth. This includes rugby, hockey, football, cricket, martial arts, skateboarding etc. Professional athletes wear custom mouthguards so the sooner children start wearing, and seeing them as the norm, the better.

There are different types of mouthguards available – off the shelf boil and bite types that you can get from sports shops or ones that are custom made and fitted by a dental professional. The Oral Health Foundation suggest that custom fitted mouthguards from a dental professional are the safest and preferred option. This is because they offer the best comfort, fit and protection as are made from an exact mould of the mouth. We can even make them for children fitted with braces. Our custom mouthguards range from £25-£55 which may sound a lot of money, but compared to a lifetime of dental treatment or the distress of tooth loss, it really isn’t.

Why not come along to one of our Mouthguard Impression Days this summer and get another job ticked off your list!
